A few days ago we decided to do a different adventure. The plan was to visit a beautiful waterfall, called Salto del Limón, in the province of Samaná. There was only one small detail, and it was that we need to make a hike back and forth, between hills and mud, of about 5.5 kilometers. There was the option of hiring a mule, but we wanted to have the experience of going at our own pace walking.
Most families see an adventure like this as limiting, if they plan to carry a baby in their arms. Although we are not going to say that it is easier than walking without them, we can say from our experience that it is possible. The satisfaction of having the whole family in this adventure, rewards the physical effort of the moment.
When talking about going on adventure with small children or babies, planning is key. For a day of adventure, the ideal is to be able to organize the activities in such a way that they coincide the hours of food and naps of the baby, with breaks for rest. Being able to enjoy nature and listen to the sounds of the birds, it would be difficult with a crying baby.
Being prepared for a single unexpected event will make the difference. That is why it is advisable to take what is necessary to keep the baby comfortable. If the baby has discomfort in the gums, it is helpful to have your teether attached so it doesn’t fall in the ground and get dirty. If the baby has already started his/her complementary feeding, it is ideal to have his/her favorite snacks. And of course, many extra diapers and complete clothes change.
In our experience, we can say that the difference to be comfortable walking in the adventure, has been decisive the use of an ergonomic baby carrier. The ring slings or wraps, are comfortable for home use or for short walks in the city, however, for a long walk it is essential that it is a baby carrier capable of distributing the weight of the baby on the back of the parents. It is always advisable to inform yourself before making the purchase to be sure to choose an option that complies with the quality and safety regulations. There is a wide variety of models and brands in the market. The important thing is to be clear about the needs of the specific family.
If mom / dad and baby are comfortable, it is likely to be a pleasant and unforgettable experience for the family.
Locals did not believe we could finish the hike, if it was not on a mule. And to their surprise, they saw us coming back, tired, but with that feeling of: "We made it!".
