Here we are doing our thing. Once again we wanted to do something different, and we marked on the map to visit Jamao al Norte. We only knew where it was, because since a many years ago we have been very close many times when visiting Cabarete.

The first thing we asked ourselves was: "What can we do that, in one way or another, combine family, nature, outdoor life and adventure?". Quickly something came to mind, and we would do just that.

Let's go kayaking 5 kilometers downstream along the Rio Yasica until we reached the confluence with the Rio Jamao! Sounds like a good plan, right?

From the moment of the idea, the five of us were very excited. Our motto: "trust, pack and let's go", it makes more and more sense everyday.

Before continuing to give you the details, it is important that you know that this adventure was done through Jamao Ecotours (at the end of this post we will leave you the contact details). It is a community project, where the first beneficiaries of this sustainable adventure tourism, are precisely those who live in nearby communities. Guides and support staff are local. Snacks and lunches are prepared by townspeople. These same people are the ones who care for and protect their area, to ensure that we can enjoy these natural resources for many more years.

Here you have all the information you need to know:

  • The journey to the Jamao Ecotours office is completely paved and is located in the center of town. From there the staff of Jamao Ecotours transfer you in a safari truck to the river, which by the way, it is a lot of fun!
  • Excursion time: 5 hours total, with round trip transfers from the Jamao Ecotours office to the river (approximately 3 hours on the kayaks).
  • At the beginning you receive a brief explanation about the community project, and how the community benefits through this sustainable adventure tourism.
  • They provide kayak training, in addition to providing you with helmets and vests, for safety reasons.
  • The kayaking trip includes 4 breaks, and in one of them there is a typical snack made by people from the community.
  • It is not necessary to know how to swim. It is a very calm river.
  • It is advisable to wear water shoes, sunscreen, and clothes that can get wet, but protect from the sun.
  • The guides that accompany you throughout the journey are highly trained, in addition to a very high level of service.
  • At the end of the excursion there is a typical lunch, cooked with the best flavor in the world: the countryside.
  • The excursion is highly recommended for the whole family.
  • Requires some physical effort.
  • In the kayaks can go 1 or 2 people. In our case we use 2 kayaks for the five of us.
  • Prices: Adults RD $ 1,400 and children from 5 to 10 years RD $ 700 (children under 5 years do not pay).

Jamao Ecotours offers other trails and activities in the area. When we take advantage of this type of sustainable adventure tourism, we collaborate with the inhabitants of nearby communities.
