A fistful of sand in the middle of the sea

How did we get to Cayo Arena? We left from Santo Domingo very early with a group of adventurous families, just like us. With much desire to know our country, to add value to our lives through all the experiences we live in each adventure, and the desire to appreciate the beauty of nature.

It was 7 o’clock on Friday morning. Ready at the meeting point. Duarte highway heading to the Santiago beltway. We passed by Villa González, Bisonó, Maizal, Ranchete, Los Hidalgos, Villa Isabela, Estero Hondo...and finally Punta Rucia. A fantastic paradise!

That first day was to arrive and admire the place. Something unplanned happened to us. We were thinking that we would have dinner at a restaurant in the area, and guess what? There are not many options, but fortunately we had some ingredients, borrowed a grill from the hotel where we were staying, and ended up with a night of hundreds stars, a delicious dinner, the ocean for us and a lot of stories! It is worth clarifying that the hotel, Paraíso Ecolodge, can prepare dinner if you let them know beforehand.

Beep! Beep beep! Beep! Saturday 8 o’clock. Time to wake up and have breakfast to leave to Cayo Arena, that little fist of sand in the middle of the sea. Only 25 minutes by speed boats is the true paradise. Surrounded by crystal clear waters and a coral barrier that possibly houses one of the richest marine ecosystems on the island. The experience of exploring these corals was fascinating. You can hire this tour through the hotel, and they will include transportation by speed boat, drinks and some snacks in Cayo Arena, and lunch when the tour ends. The return is through a mangroves area, extremely interesting.

During the afternoon we went sightseeing around the little town and took advantage of the beaches that are stunning. In the evening we had dinner at the Punta Rucia Lodge; definitely the largest hotel in the area, with comfortable rooms and bungalows, and a restaurant with a very well prepared gastronomic offer.

Sunday. We do not want to leave. What do we do? The children became friends with some baby turtles with whom they played and fed. See you soon little turtles! We will be back soon!
